We’re kicking off this new series with a very unique offering from King’s County Distillery, one of our favorite small businesses & distilleries—Chocolate Whiskey.
…Chocolate Whiskey?
Yeah, you read that right.
Who else had visions of sickly-sweet dessert cocktails & glorified alcoholic chocolate milk? I definitely did when I was first told about it.
But I also knew it was by King’s County Distillery, so it had to be balanced and nuanced, & I’ve been excited to try it for over a year now.
First, a little about the distillery. Kings County Distillery, located in the Brooklyn Navy Yard, began operating in 2010, making it the first distillery in the city since prohibition.
Their chocolate whiskey is made by infusing Kings County Distillery Moonshine with the leftover cocoa husks from Mast Brothers Chocolate, a craft chocolate company located near the distillery. While it is a flavored whiskey, this flavoring doesn’t just make the spirit more approachable, but also provides a more complex flavor.
Tasting Notes:
Nose: Chocolatey aroma.
Palate: a unique, full-flavored spirit offering rich, bittersweet notes of dark chocolate & roasted coffee backed by the distinctive corn and cereal notes of the moonshine.
Finish: Sweet, rich, & robust
I would almost compare this offering to Mr. Black or an amaro than your run-of-the-mill bourbon. I personally plan on using this as more of a modifier or split-base in cocktails since the full base can definitely take over other flavors. As is standard with Kings County, it is also quite a nice sipper neat or on a rock if you really want rich, chocolatey notes.
Also, we have great news—Kings County now ships to over 40 states! Up until very recently, they were available in NY state only! So if you’ve been wanting to give them a try, we highly recommend everything we’ve had by Kings County.

We feel a huge part of craft cocktails is a wide knowledge of different products, but most people don’t get to taste hundreds of different spirits to compare & contrast, as we’ve been fortunate to do during our careers. We hope this series helps open new doors and products that you maybe wouldn’t have known about or tried otherwise.
Cheers! 🥃
